–– GreenTech Launches Solar Cell Phone Charging Pilot (details below) ––

The City of Somerville is announcing the rollout of the Somerville GreenTech program. To meet Mayor Joe Curtatone's ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, we recognize that municipalities and industry must work together on the development and adoption of green technology. In October 2014, the City issued a Request for Information (RFI) on green tech companies' needs and goals for partnering with the City. We learned a lot from the RFI responses, and we are excited to announce the first two components of the Somerville GreenTech program will be green tech pilot projects and events for green tech companies. "Help us lead the way in becoming a sustainable city."

Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone
"Somerville is a city where we put our creative energy to work. Every day, members of our community are developing innovative ways to solve urgent environmental problems. As a City, we see that collaboration with emerging green technology companies will help us lead the way in becoming a sustainable city. Fostering the development and use of green technology in our community will sustain our environment and economy, and it will help us reach our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050."

This discussion and networking event took place on June 23, 2015 at the offices of SmartBear in Assembly Square, Somerville. Participants from Massachusetts municipalities, local green tech companies, and industry stakeholders, came together to discuss clean tech solutions to municipal problems and how to bridge the gap in municipal adoption of innovative green technologies. Participants were joined by Mayor Joe Curtatone, MassCEC CEO Alicia Barton, and SmartBear CEO Doug McNary.

SOMERVILLE GREEN TECH PROGRAM LAUNCHES SOLAR CELL PHONE CHARGING PILOT
Model Z charging stations in Union Square, Davis Square, Assembly Row, and Ball Square will enhance citizen connectivity and promote sustainability.

The City of Somerville is excited to announce the second pilot project organized by the Somerville GreenTech program. Somerville-based
WrightGrid will install five Model Z solar cell-phone charging stations throughout the city. The stations will be temporarily installed in Union Square, Davis Square, Assembly Row, and Ball Square for 60 days. We're hoping to enhance citizen connectivity and promote Somerville's commitment to sustainability and cleantech with the success of this pilot. Through Somerville's GreenTech program we're able to offer WrightGrid the opportunity to pilot their solar charging stations, test its current generation station, collect valuable and detailed usage data and gain power management experience through a dramatically changing season. Anyone is welcome to charge their mobile devices free of charge—and free of carbon emissions!  If you're at a charging station location and need any assistance, please call WrightGrid's support team at 1.800.256.7918 where a WrightGrid team member will be available 24/7 to assist you.
